High Levels of Plastic Found in Canadian Seabirds
High Levels of Plastic Found in Canadian Seabirds
Submitted by Brittany Shoot on July 06, 2012
A startling new study from University of British Columbia researcher Stephanie Avery-Gorum found that 93 percent of autopsied seabirds had bellyfuls of plastic. The deceased birds were collected along the coasts of British Columbia, Washington State, and Oregon between October 2009 and April 2010. One single bird in the batch had 454 pieces of plastic in its gut.
"This highlights the need for a reliable, internationally standardized method of monitoring trends in plastic pollution."
The study reports explains that these sorts of findings definitively demonstrate why further research must be done, and why North American researchers from both the U.S. and Canada must work together to compare data and propose results. This study has also been compared with an earlier study of seabirds ingesting plastic. In a 1980 study from the University of Alaska, 58 percent marine birds collected between 1969 and 1977 had ingested plastic.
